The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation announced today the creation of The University Student Living Scholarship Program, which will bestow academic grants to higher education students residing in student housing communities owned or managed by University Student Living, LLC. Current residents are invited to apply now for grants that will be awarded for the 2016/2017 academic year.
University Student Living, LLC, is the comprehensive student housing company of The Michaels Organization, whose non-profit educational foundation has awarded more than $5.2 million in grants to residents of The Michaels Organization’s affordable and military housing communities since the Foundation was established in 1991.
“‘Giving back’ is embedded in our corporate culture, and there is no better way to give back than with the gift of an education,” said John J. O’Donnell, President of The Michaels Organization. “We are pleased to now offer this opportunity to our newest residents—those living in our state-of-the-art, purpose-built student housing communities.”
University Student Living, as an independent operating company of The Michaels Organization is one of the country’s most active developers of on- and off-campus student housing, having executed more than $3 billion in developments. In 2015, USL launched management operations and currently serves students in 12 communities located near universities across the country.
The online application for The USL Scholarship Program went live September 1 and USL residents will have until October 17 to submit a completed application. Awards will be announced in November. Scholarship checks will be sent directly to the post-secondary institutions on behalf of the scholarship recipient in December 2016. All residents enrolled in accredited colleges, universities or vocational training programs are eligible to apply. Students may reapply every year of their education.
The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation was the first of its kind to present college scholarships to the residents of affordable housing when The Michaels Organization’s founder Michael J. Levitt established the foundation in 1991. In 1997, the program expanded to include residents of military housing communities after The Michaels Organization began developing and managing privatized housing on military bases across the country.
Over the past two and a half decades, the foundation has helped more than 2,400 residents achieve their dreams of higher education.
“Education has the power to transform lives,” said USL President Joseph Coyle. “We are so proud to offer this unique opportunity to our USL student residents.”
All foundation funding for the USL Scholarship Program comes from private donations from USL’s business network.
